Looking to reduce the noise from your electronic drums but can’t afford Roland’s Noise Eater pads? You can in fact make a DIY alternative at a fraction of the price!

First things first, if you want to make your electronic drums quieter, you need to understand the difference between impact noise and airborne noise.

Impact noise is the physical impact on solid materials. Think of a beater striking a bass drum or stick against a drum pad. These impact vibrations get transmitted through your drum rack or stands and into the floor, and can result in a deep, bassy sound heard around the house as you play.

Meanwhile, airborne noise is sound transmitted through the air, which can cause vibration when it reaches a solid object such as a wall.

The DIY noise reduction pad method below reduces impact noise — it’s ideal for reducing that thumping sound in the room below or next door, as it greatly reduces vibrations emanating from your bass drum while it’s played.

While I’m not a soundproofing expert, one thing that I found through researching this method was that there’s no real way to measure the reduction in impact noise.

However I can say that these noise reduction platforms have made a real impact (no pun intended) — it’s an almost night and day difference. Yes, from the room below you can still hear the drums being played, but it’s as if there is another floor between the drums and the listener.

That’s a massive contrast to before when the thumping from the bass drum was transmitting loudly through the floor. The difference is remarkable, especially given the price tag!
