5 Brands that are Killing it with their Mobile Applications

In this growing technology era where the majority of people use smartphones, mobile apps are a blooming world of opportunities for businesses. Mobile apps can be used by businesses of different shapes and sizes & from startups to enterprises. Various software development companies and mobile startups have boosted their reach by producing such appealing apps that no user could resist.

34% of marketers plan on launching at least one mobile app this year, stated by a 2015 marketing survey. Though mobile apps help in increasing sales and building a strong user base for a company, it is important for brands to have a clear strategy on how they plan to drive app downloads, make the content compelling, and increase long-term user engagement.

Some of the points to keep in mind while developing a mobile app are:

Here are 5 brands that experienced great success in launching a mobile application.

McDonald's made use of not only their mobile application but also used Instagram and Twitter to interact with customers in a new way and advertise their neglected products. As a marketing strategy, the company ran a promotion encouraging customers to capture images of their favorite meals using the mobile application, back in 2013. They also created a mobile ad asking users to “Share Your Biggest Instagram Moments.” McDonald's is always famous for mobile marketing and they have held several mobile marketing campaigns with different business goals. These initiatives were a real success because it brought fresh attention to older products.

In 2009, Starbucks launched the myStarbucks app that allowed users to locate nearby coffee shops, learn about sorts, types, and coffee brews, and suggest their own drinks. Two years later they launched a Card Mobile App for loyalty card customers, which enabled them to pay for in-store purchases via phones. Using these new initiatives, Starbucks has made $146 mln, 8 % of total revenue, on interest alone.

3. Nivea

The mobile app and technology-laden magazine created by Nivea Sun Kids allows parents to keep track of their kids in busy spaces such as the beach. They conducted a campaign called “The Protection Ad” campaign which included a bracelet that works in conjunction with a mobile app to let parents follow their children’s every move. With this initiative, Nivea achieved a 62% increase in sales in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil was their target location) and for the first time ever, achieved top sales in its sector.

4. Volkswagen

Volkswagen released an app called ‘Volkswagen’s SmileDrive app’ and with this app, users can create shareable travelogues that include drive details, such as miles traveled, weather, and minutes on the road; photos; and status updates. It can be connected to any vehicle via Bluetooth and runs in the background while a drive is ongoing. This introduced a bunch of potential customers to the brand.

L’Oreal introduced an augmented reality Makeup Genius app that makes the smartphone camera into a virtual mirror by using facial mapping technology that lets users try on products in real-time. The users can scan their face and apply makeup or try on specific products and looks specifically chosen by L’Oreal experts, all through the device’s viewfinder. With this initiative, the L’Oreal app has been downloaded 10 million times in the US, France, and China, and L’Oréal is predicting 500,000 downloads in Australia this year.

Therefore, with more mobile phones than people on Earth, it is not something to be shocked about when considering the number of mobile apps exceeds the number of mobile phones in human hands. Modern businesses cannot afford to take such opportunities for granted. Mobile apps can keep your customers connected to your brand, help your business stay organized, and what is more important, show your business to the world.
