The Importance of Information Architecture in Web Design and its impact on User Experience.

Information Architecture is an aspect of web design that many designers often overlook or do not get a grasp of. For some web designers, it is either “Aesthetics over performance”, or “Aesthetics over User Experience.”

If you truly care for users, then you should care about the content on your website is presented. You should care about Information Architecture.

As a web designer myself with over 10 years of industry experience, I clearly can truly attest to how important information architecture is in web design and its impact on users.

Web design begins with content in mind, and how these contents are organized, structured, and presented is what information architecture is all about. Information architecture involves guiding a user on the important things to see first on a website. Here, website contents are structured and categorized in a logical manner.

A properly implemented information architecture on a website would ensure that the cart is not placed before the horse, or on the horse 🙂. There is no guesswork to this application. You either implement it right, or the website suffers an increased bounce rate.

No matter how good of an eye-balling effect your website might have, if users cannot easily find what they seek, they will move away from your website.

Let’s look at another example to see how Information Architecture impacts a user’s experience. This time, we look at the top bar and navigation menu of CLI College.

It is good practice to always ensure that the most important information is put out first. The top bar design and content organization weren’t accidental. Everything element in that block was intentionally placed, as this helps the user know, the recent happenings at CLI College, and the phone numbers were placed just after just in case the user needs to call as soon as possible.

The primary menus are organized in such a way that creates a clear path to describe what is most important to the user.

2. Navigation Design: This entails creating intuitive menus, applying consistent labels, and ensuring the prominent placement and ease of access to navigation elements on the website.

3. User Flow: Understanding user behavior and designing pathways for users to follow is crucial. By mapping out user flows and creating clear paths, users are enabled to easily accomplish their objectives.

4. Information Hierarchy: With the proper application of visual cues, typography, and layout, you can establish an effective hierarchy of information that helps users comprehend the relative importance of different content elements.

5. Scalability and Future Growth: A properly designed information architecture provides the right structure for future growth and expansion, as it allows for new content and features to be added easily without the need to revamp the existing structure.

Information architecture is a crucial part of web design as it plays a vital role in optimizing user experience. And by effectively structuring content, it aims to classify information in a clear and understandable manner while establishing relationships between content pieces. This strategic organization enables users to easily find the information they seek, ultimately leading to improved user satisfaction and engagement.

Just like everything worth learning, Information architecture is a science of restructuring content, and like anything worth learning, it should be learned and applied if you must create a good user experience.
