Endangered Species

Animals have been the true living species of the world for well beyond the human existence. So why is it that, after three hundred thousand years of Homo Sapiens existence, that we are now starting to see that species that have been here before us are starting to diminish out of existence? Today I will be mainly concerning you with the loss of habitat, pollution, and poaching, and how much they've been killing the animals.

Factors are a huge part of why some animals have declined over the years. A loss of habitat has been one of the main focuses for the decline of some species. Unfortunately, the loss of habitat has been a huge part of humans attempting to invade their space because of growth over the years. For example, many animals rely heavily on trees for their homes. Humans eventually invade their homes and cut down their trees. This gives them less land to live, hunt, and reproduce. The animals homes are ultimately destroyed for the ones living in those trees. This causes them to seek other shelter. Another negative coming from loss of habitat is animal and human interaction. Although this may seem all cute and cuddly, it’s actually quite dangerous for the animal, and also even the human. Cars, pesticides, hunting, and other interactions cause huge losses for the animals themselves. The animals simply are just patrolling their areas, and unfortunately they come into human contact . This can be fatal if they’re not careful.

Now just as bad as loss of habitat can be to our ecosystem and animals, this can be just as worse. You see this a lot on news outlets and other areas, but pollution is also a big factor for the decline of certain species.I cannot tell you how often I’ve seen how these two factors have affected animal life within my lifetime. During the BP oil spill for instance, so much was affected for the environment and the animals themselves that it was just sickening. It affected their food supply, their homes, and even themselves. As marine animals were infected with the oil being in the water, it was basically killing them, seeing as that was their literal oxygen being tainted. It was just as bad for ducks, where the oil coated their feathers, causing hypothermia to greatly affect those who lived in the colder climates throughout the world, come migration. The affects from that spill still linger today, as humans and the environment are trying to clean up from out past mistakes.

Now I make my way to poaching, which is a horror for many animals living in certain parts of the world. The big difference between poaching and trophy hunting, is that one is regulated by the government with laws, limits, and permits given to hunt a certain number of these species a year, and only while “in season”. Poaching on the other hand, is done by people who skip all of those processes, in order to hunt whatever they find necessary or valuable. This act is found very illegal throughout the world but is done regardless by the people in an attempt to sell whatever they kill that is valuable on the animal, for instance the tusks of an elephant, or even the horn on a rhino, as seen above.

Some of these problems in the world are severe and just can’t be taken back or reversed. A lot of the problem, is that a good percentage of the world isn't aware of the problems that face these animals on a day-to-day basis. They might think they know a little sliver of what the real reality is, but it isn't enough to stop what is happening without action. I really urge whoever reads this to go out or read up on this pressing issue, because unfortunately, the next generation of people might not get to know what a rhino even is without books to help them discover the horrors.

The reason I wrote about endangered species was to really talk to the people and show them what has been happening to the wildlife throughout the history of man. I was very passionate about this subject in this paper because, not only does this affect the animal itself, a loss of animals can affect the people, a lot greater than we know. My main focal points in this essay were loss of habitat, pollution, and poaching.

I am clearly against every one of these aspects, as they are clearly harming our environment. I tried to include some examples as best I could by bringing up things such as the BP oil spill to really connect with the audience by bringing the past up, as well as showing some visual images to really appeal and bring emotion into my essay. Another strategy I used to please the audience is bring up some facts for poaching. It is true that you do need all these requirements to trophy hunt, but poaching is the opposite and without any permits. People tend to have a little bit of an idea on endangered species but not really the “why” as to why they are endangered or at the point that they are at currently. I tried to shed a bit of light with the main points on this subject so that when someone read my essay, they would be inclined to do a little more research themselves in order to really get the bigger picture on the pressing subject matter. Writing this essay has given me a better understanding of how writers must appeal to the audience, so that they might be able to have the audience bring change onto their area. I realize now how much of an impact writers truly do have on their audience, by the power of their words, that’s why I was careful as to not just say hunting was bad, because trophy hunting actually does bring reliefs in conservation as a result of hunting a few animals a year to save the rest of their species with the money that they raised. So instead, I focused my writing on poaching in order to bring light to the real travesty. I then ended my essay with some “food for thought” for the audience and a bit of a question as to what they want the future generation to witness, thus causing them to reflect for a bit.
