The Value of Quality Assurance

When my boss first suggested that I write a blog post about the value of quality assurance, I stared blankly at her. Doesn’t every company producing a digital product — an app, a website, a software…

Japan Wants Video Games in the Olympics

Change is inevitable, and sometimes it’s for the best, but not always. We (us humans) don’t have to constantly change everything just for the sake of staying modern and hip. Too many people are having a hard time understanding this concept. And, for that reason, bad changes keep occurring. It’s this flawed concept of progress that has given birth to the horrible idea of putting video games in the Olympics. Worst. Idea. Ever. OK, maybe it’s not the worst, but it sure is a doozy that needs to be shot down.

One of the biggest proponents for this terrible idea is Japan’s prime minister, Shinzo Abe. His desire to see video games awkwardly sandwiched among the finest athletic competitions in the world is a bit ironic due to the fact that video game tournaments are against the law in Japan. His country is lacking when it comes to winning Olympic medals, and surely he sees this as an opportunity for Japan to boost their stats. But, seriously, you can’t consider a video game medal to be as good as a track and field or a swimming medal.

Abe and the Japanese ruling party are pushing for the legalization of gaming tournaments as we speak. The reason that these tournaments aren’t allowed in the Land of the Rising Sun is because of old anti-gambling laws. Speaking of gambling: Bookmakers in London, England have the odds at 4–1 for video games getting the go-ahead for the 2024 Summer Games in Paris. I guess playing video games is a summer “sport.” It sort of makes sense seeing as how kids have more time to play in the summer. Back in my day kids were outside riding bikes, playing in the woods, breaking windows on abandoned buildings, shoplifting, playing real sports, etc. all summer long. The current generation of kids complain that it’s too hot to play outside in the summer. Bunch of wimps.

Just because competitive gaming has been given the title “esports,” it doesn’t make it a sport. I could call my left foot a battleship, but it would still be just a foot. Putting video games in the Olympics would tarnish the luster and prestige of Olympic medals. Think of all the great athletes from previous Olympic games: Michael Phelps, Carl Lewis, the Miracle On Ice hockey team… do we really want to cheapen such accomplishments by giving gold medals to people who couldn’t throw a basketball into an empty swimming pool. There are…
