We Can Do Hard Things

Because of Jesus

We have a sign in our hallway that says: “We can do hard things.” It hangs nestled among a bunch of family photos, the most prominent ones from a photoshoot we had not knowing if our son would survive a host of medical problems discovered at birth. We wanted to capture all of him in full color.

I wish there was more to the sign. I wish that it said:

He strengthens us.

He nurtures us.

He cares for us.

He provides for us.

He lives inside of us.

We must never miss the source of each step we take on this journey.

The journey is long. It is not we who do the hard things in our own strength, but Him at work through us.

Jesus says:

Don’t be surprised when things are hard. When they aren’t going like you wanted or even expected. This is not your plan. It was never your plan.

But God is with you. Nurturing you, providing for your every need in season, loving you even though your life doesn’t look like everyone else’s, and giving you peace.

The reason we have peace is because, even though this journey is long, this is not how it ends. What your life looks like now, on earth, is not the ending of the story. Jesus is bringing His Kingdom reign to earth every day. He is victorious in everything.

These are my very favorite verses. They are as much a promise to us as they are an instruction on how to live:

Allow yourself to be nurtured by the God of the Universe. Sit in His presence and soak up his love, care, attention, and encouragement for you. Because of Him, you can do hard things.
