How I Lost 40 Pounds in 1 Year Without Realizing It

How ditching the fads and diet culture mentality led me to ultimate results

I’ve always considered myself a healthy, athletic person.

I grew up playing competitive soccer for 12 years of my life, which kept me in shape year-round without having to think much about it. Coming from a family of athletes, I’ve always had a pretty good grasp of healthy eating and the importance of it. Plus, spending time outdoors and being active is my favorite way to bask in my free time.

But, going to college posed a lot of challenges for me — as it does for so many that are living on their own for the first time. Helllloooo freshman fifteen.

When I was in college, my diet consisted of cheap takeout food, jars of olives, spoonfuls of peanut butter, popcorn, and way too much alcohol. I didn’t know how to workout without soccer, so working out became one of the most difficult tasks on Earth — plus, I was busy with classes, a job, and internships. There was no in-between for me: I was either running 5 miles every day on a treadmill or doing nothing at all.

Over time, I gained weight. But it wasn’t until about a year after graduating college that I became extremely aware of not only the fact that I gained weight, but the fact that I was straight-up living an unhealthy lifestyle and it was taking an equal toll on my mental and physical health.

In May of 2019, I realized I needed to take control of my health for the betterment of my life. That decision day, I had watched a documentary focused on health and nutrition choices. It all changed for me.

I weighed myself for the first time in about 5 years. The scale read back to me: 185.3 pounds.

That entire year, I didn’t weigh myself to check-in. I didn’t want to focus so much on the numbers.

When May 2020 rolled around several months ago, I decided that the year mark was a good check-in point. To my surprise, the scale read back 145 pounds to me this time.
