The Pros And Cons Of Publishing Exclusively On Amazon

When you start your self-publishing journey — whether it be in romance, science fiction, erotica, or another genre — you will come across Amazon and KDP Select.

Publishing on Amazon is almost required for success. Since they have the largest share of the eBook market and people trust the site with their credit card information, choosing not to publish on Amazon is almost like shooting yourself in the foot.

However, publishing exclusively under their KDP Select program is something else entirely.

KDP Select is a program that Amazon offers for free to the self-publishing masses who want to stay exclusive to Amazon. This means that your book is published only on their website and not offered anywhere else — like Kobo, Barnes & Nobles, Smashwords, or another site. If you violate the exclusivity contract, Amazon has been known to remove your ability to join KDP Select in the future or even ban your account.

The program runs for 90 days and automatically re-opts you in for an additional 90 days unless you turn that feature off. This gives you the option to see if KDP Select is for you, or if going wide is a better strategy for your publishing career.

The readers who use KDP Select are subscribers to Amazon’s offering of Kindle Unlimited. This allows them to pay $9.99 a month and “borrow” as many books as they’d like throughout the month. They make the most of their $9.99 by reading as many books as possible.

You may hear authors talking about “page reads” or KENPC — Kindle Edition Normalized Page Count. What this means is that Amazon assigns your book a number of pages based on the formatting. If you are given the KENPC of 100 pages, that means your book has been determined by Amazon to be 100 pages long when read.

You are paid based on the KDP Select Global Fund, which is recalculated every month depending on the number of individuals in the Kindle Unlimited program. This means that each…
