5 Essential Drone Shots For Your Next Project

Our most commonly requested drone photography & videography shots

Our photographers & videographers have also worked with a litany of other companies throughout our time in the industry. And at those companies, we noticed one consistent problem: communication.

Clients would say one thing, and photographers would take it to mean something else. This led to headaches, reshoots, and overall frustration.

The reason this happened is because clients and vendors speak a different language — the former speaks in terms of the outcome (what they’ll get), whereas the latter speaks in terms of the process (how they’ll do it).

We vowed to never let that happen to us. So to ensure we’re always on the same page, we’ve put together a short list of beautiful, commonly requested shots that our clients love. Don’t let anyone tell you that photography & videography need to be complicated!

Long-FOV Horizon Shots are perfect for establishing the environment, context, and mood. They work exceptionally well for corporate videos, and are often used in industrial shoots as well.

To do this, we use a sufficiently wide angle lens, steer the camera towards the horizon, and slowly rotate our drone across the landscape or our subject until we find the right angle & shot.

The 45° Center Shot is a classic in real estate photography and videography, and provides a beautiful angle of the subject while also taking into account its surroundings. We typically pair this with a slow pan to achieve a full, 360° view of the home or commercial property.

Take an excellent tracking shot is a balancing act between physics & art. The drone must match the speed, direction, and distance of the object you’re tracking, and manually adjust focus at the required composition point. These shots are common in commercials, movies, and small-midsize corporate shoots (when the subject of interest is a vehicle or piece of equipment).

The Vertical Real Estate Shot is one of our favorites. This simple but effective angle lets potential buyers see the composition and spacing of a property, and allows them to appreciate roof quality & outside space. Several years ago, this shot would never be achievable without an expensive helicopter rig. Today, real estate agents can get stunning angles like these for just a few hundred dollars.

Often used in industrial or commercial shoots, the Focus Perspective shot expertly frames the target area and provides a ‘macro-style’ effect. It manually steers us to the point of our interest and the warped perspectives can be used to exaggerate the size (or lack thereof!) of an industrial or commercial property.

And that’s a wrap! There are thousands of angles and shots a drone photographer might choose, but most of them are alterations of slight permutations of these five. We hope these shots come in handy when you’re communicating with your photographer or deciding on exactly how your footage is going to look.
