3 mental disorders caused by excessive social media use.

It is reported by world health organisation ( WHO, 2017) that 10–20% children and adolescents worldwide experience mental health problems. It is assessed that 50% of all that mental health disorders are set up at the age of 14 and 75% by the age of 18. Depression and generalized anxiety disorders are most common among the children and adolescents. Royal society for public and young health movement has reported that frequency of anxiety and depression increased by 70% in past 25 years.

In spite of the fact that reasons for apparently growing mental health problems in young people are not known unequivocally , online social media are greatly blamed for increasing psychological problems.

Several studies and researches has demonstrated that excessive social media use causes serious mental health problems, among them the most common are depression, lower self-esteem and lack of sleep.

Depression is a mood disorder linked with unending feelings of sadness and lack of desire in activities that an individual once enjoyed. People suffering with depression may dwell on death or suicide, feel worthless and develop anxiety.

Humans are social species and need companies to thrive in life. In modern-day world despite the fact that social media help us stay more connected, it can never substitute real life connections. Professionals see rise in depression as evidence that the social media users forming electronicall connections are less emotionally gratifying, leaving them feeling socially isolated.

Hormones that alleviate stress and makes one happy are triggered by in person contact with others. It makes you happier, healthier and more positive.

Earlier on, magazines and advertising has been condemned for upholding dangerously unrealistic standards of success and beauty ,but atleast everyone was acknowledged that they’re idealised . Everyone have a thinking like models wearing 0 size clothing are just that : models. And even they’re retouched and Photoshoped.

Now a days, these beauty standards are set up by friends and classmates instead of models and celebrities. Majority of people show only best and most tempting moments and struggles on social media and there’s proof that these images are causing distress for many adolescents. Consequently, social media feeds become fuel for negative feelings the adolescents have about themselves.

Sleep is one of the pivotal thing that social media use can displace. Researches and studies have demonstrated that excessive social media use is linked with inadequate sleep patterns. Researches shows that almost 60% of the adolescents has the habit of checking their phones before going to bed. Generally, they got an hour less sleep than people who do not use their phones before going to bed.

It is a well-known fact that blue light from electronic screens disrupts the sleep. It is indicated by child mind institute that sleep deprivation can negatively effect the teen-agers mood and their ability to regulate emotions. Sleep and depression can become a vicious cycle, as sleep deprivation leads to depression and vice versa.

Despite the fact that excessive social media use comes up with many psychological problems , it should not be avoided completely, just limit your time of social media usage. In order to limit your social media usage time you can plan physical activities that can help you to focus on your immediate environment and circumstances. For example; read a book, go for a walk, play a game and bake some bread.
